What is FSSAI?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the regulatory authority under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, established to ensure that all food products sold in India meet safety and quality standards.
Every food business operator (FBO) — from small vendors to large manufacturers — must obtain FSSAI Registration or License to operate legally.
Types of FSSAI Licenses
Depending on your business size, turnover, and nature of activity, you can apply for one of the following:
1. Basic FSSAI Registration
For small food businesses and startups with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs.
Applicable for: petty retailers, small-scale manufacturers, local vendors, small restaurants, etc.
2. State FSSAI License
For medium-sized businesses with turnover between ₹12 lakhs – ₹20 crores.
Applicable for: mid-sized manufacturers, distributors, and storage units operating within a single state.
3. Central FSSAI License
For large-scale operations with turnover above ₹20 crores or those operating in multiple states.
Applicable for: importers, exporters, large manufacturers, and food processing companies.
Documents Required
- PAN card of applicant/business
- Aadhaar card of proprietor/director/partner
- Passport-size photographs
- Proof of business premises (rental agreement / ownership document)
- Electricity or water bill (not older than 3 months)
- Food safety management plan (FSMS declaration)
- List of food products handled/manufactured

Q1. Is FSSAI registration mandatory for all food businesses?
Yes, under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, every food business operator must obtain an FSSAI registration or license before starting operations.
Q2. How long is the FSSAI license valid?
The license is valid for 1 to 5 years, depending on the period chosen at the time of application. Renewal must be done before expiry.
